Border Collie Information

So you're looking for a border collie puppy!

Visions Border Collies want your experience in border collie ownership to be rewarding and enjoyable. But, so many times it isn't, due to the fact many people just pick a pup on appearance and buy!  Well, with the border collie it is very wise to do your homework and learn as much as possible before impulsively buying a cute border collie pup.  Most of us know all puppies are cute, soft,  have puppy breathe, lick and seem so sweet when young.  But all puppies grow up!

Border Collies are proven for being the most intelligent dog breed and are very easy to train once you learn how to communicate what you want to them. This is true. They're for the most part a highly social dog , need both mental and physical stimulation and on average live somewhere between 10 to 15 years, sometimes longer!

Persons that do best with this breed are those who like a challenge and lead a active lifestyle. Don't get a border collie if you want a low key, lay around the house type pet as his breed loves adventure and loves it when their humans join them in that adventure. If you want a dog that will go with you and share your active lifestyle the border collie just may be the breed for you to consider.

But, please consider these questions carefully:

 1. Are you willing to be the leader to your pup and spend quality time in training especially before your pup reaches 6 months of age? Repeating good behavior is a must with this breed. You must train them to do the right thing and not assume they will just grow out of something like, puppy biting, jumping up, etc.

 2. Are you ready for dealing with a possible rowdy type pup that tries to out fox you daily? This breed learns very quickly both the right thing, but also the wrong thing. A border collie pup can be a handful if allowed to get the upper hand. They must be taught to have good manners.

 3. Are you willing to socialize and make sure your border collie is trained to have at the least basic obedience commands or manners? There is much time involved in raising a well mannered pup. Puppies need to be taken places, meet many new people and meet other new dogs and other animals so they won't be frightened  and be fearful when an adult.

 4. Are you aware having a border collie puppy is much like having a furry kid with many of the same demands? Border collie pups will demand their way by barking many times. One must learn to how to not allow this behavior to become a habit.

 5. Do you know that border collies can become diggers, barkers, herders of children/other pets and they can become destructive when bored and frustrated from lack training, companionship and exercise? More reasons to carefully train you dog and spend time not only training your pup, but also just time together to form that special bond between it and the person or family.

 6. Are you willing to go the distance during the sometimes rough stages of your border collie pup growing up, that may last until they reach 2 years of age? Young puppies, 8 weeks to 12 weeks can be tough since they are going to their new home and it causes insecurity. They will whine and cry because they don't know you yet. Other difficult stages occur around the 4 to 5 month old period when they want to become the 'boss', so they will 'test' you trying to trick you into letting them. This is the time when most people have trouble and training is very important to maintain good behavior in your puppy.

 7. Can you deal with making sure your border collie pup is well cared for and are more concerned with the temperament and  health of your border collie puppy instead of just the 'perfect markings' or color? ( This is especially true for pet/companion homes ).

 8. Do you live in a home situation which will provide amble room for housing and keeping a border collie through its life? ( Most apartment dwellers normally do not offer the room needed for this breed ).

After considering the above questions and are sure you're still interested in border collie ownership, you may be one 'up to the task' of this breed. Be really sure if you have young children under 5 years of age you're doing the right thing.

Normally, we think this breed is best for those that  have owned dogs before and understand how to be a leader to their dog and they can teach a dog basic obedience. ( come, heel, sit, down, stay, off ). We suggest taking a puppy obedience class to start off with and this experience also helps with socializing the pup. Visions Border Collies offers continued training  and Behavior Stages Information to their customers if they need help,  but we may refer you to a professional trainer if need be. We are an advocate of positive reinforcement training methods, but sometimes traditional methods are needed too.  We believe in Crate Training which helps with housebreaking.

Please understand, we want to place in a pet home a beautiful, healthy border collie pup, but we will reserve the highest quality pups for those that intend to compete or to experienced ethical breeders that are willing to do the health testing we require.

We do have a simple contract to protect the pup, the purchaser and the breeder. This allows us to be sure there are no misunderstandings. We've always believed that 'getting it in writing' is the way to do business. We're an ethical, responsible border collie breeder that requires approved active homes for our border collie puppies. We're more than willing to explain more about the border collie breed if contacted to help you decide weather owning a border collie is the best choice for you.
